Do porta potties work in a Butler winter?

Yes. Butler averages 35 inches of snow a year with January lows near 17 °F, and standard porta potties run through all of it because the tank is charged with a brine solution that keeps the contents liquid to about 0 °F. Flushable units and sink tanks are the exception: their fresh water freezes, so from November to March we rent them only with a heated enclosure.

Winter units get a brine charge at every weekly service so the tank stays liquid in single-digit cold.

What is brine, and is it safe?

Brine is a salt-water solution with the usual blue deodorizer, added to the tank at delivery and at each weekly service from November through March. The salt lowers the freezing point of the tank contents to roughly 0 °F so waste can be pumped on the service day. Brine is non-toxic, is pumped out with the waste and hauled to the treatment plant, and adds nothing to the price.

How does winter service work?

Weekly winter service is the same pump, wash, recharge and restock, with two changes: the interior is washed with heated water from the truck instead of being left wet, and the driver checks the door spring, latch and vent stack for ice. Units get serviced on the route day as long as the access is plowed; an unplowed unit is serviced the next route day without charge.

  • Keep the unit on a plowed pad, not where the plow pushes snow.
  • Stake and strap on open sites; winter wind off Lake Arthur tips unstaked units.
  • Face the door away from the prevailing west wind so snow does not drift against it.
  • Do not use a torch, heater or salt on the unit; the plastic cracks in cold when heated locally.

Who rents in winter around Butler?

Winter rentals in Butler County are mostly home builds that broke ground in fall, road and utility crews on the Route 228 corridor, gas-well pads, hunting camps from archery through flintlock season, ice-fishing spots on Lake Arthur, Christmas tree farms in November and December, and plant docks that run year-round. Holiday-season events use heated restroom trailers.

Winter questions

Will the toilet freeze solid?

Not with brine in the tank. Brine keeps the contents pumpable to about 0 °F, and Butler's record cold nights are rare enough that a weekly recharge handles the season. In a multi-day stretch below zero we add a mid-week brine top-off at no charge.

Can I rent a flushable unit for a December party?

Only inside a heated space such as a garage or heated tent. Outdoors, the flush water freezes. For a December reception the heated two-station restroom trailer is the right unit.

Does the handwash station work in January?

Yes, with non-toxic RV antifreeze mixed into the fresh-water tank. The soap and towels are unaffected. Most winter jobsites take a station with antifreeze rather than a deluxe unit with a sink.

What happens if my site is not plowed on service day?

The driver skips it, texts the site contact and returns on the next route day at no charge. If the unit is full, a special trip once the path is open is billed as an extra service visit.

Is there a winter surcharge?

No. Brine, heated-water washing and winter staking are included in the standard 28-day rate.
