How many porta potties does OSHA require on my jobsite?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers from 20 to 200, and 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers above 200. A standard porta potty supplies one seat and one urinal, so a 30-person crew needs 1 unit by the table and 2 units for reasonable wait times.

Source: 29 CFR 1926.51(c), Table D-1. The minimum is a legal floor; our recommendation is based on one unit filling in about 200 uses, so that a crew of 10 uses one tank per week. Handwashing: 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities near the toilets when workers handle contaminants. Full breakdown with the mobile-crew exception on the OSHA requirements page.

How does billing work on a construction rental?

Construction rentals bill every 28 days per unit, with weekly service included, plus a one-time $75 delivery and pickup charge on the first invoice. There is no contract and no proration: one day or 28 days is the same cycle rate. The rental renews until you call for pickup, and billing stops the day the unit leaves.

Contractor accounts

  • Net-15 invoicing with a signed credit application and W-9 exchange; PO numbers printed on every invoice.
  • Certificate of insurance sent to the GC or owner on request, usually same day.
  • One account, many sites: units are tracked by site address, and the invoice lists each site separately.
  • Service day texts: the driver texts the site contact when service is done, with a photo if requested.

Pennsylvania note: Pennsylvania adopts the IBC through its Uniform Construction Code (34 Pa. Code §403.21); IBC Chapter 33 requires sanitary facilities during construction. Local inspectors in Butler Township and Cranberry look for a toilet on site at the footer inspection.

Where should the porta potty go on a construction site?

Place jobsite units on firm, level ground within 25 feet of where the service truck can park, outside the swing of equipment and away from the material lay-down, with the door facing away from the street. Keep them reachable after framing: a unit that ends up behind a deck or a parked excavator cannot be serviced and gets skipped until the next route day.

  1. Mark the spot before delivery. A spray-painted X or a text with a photo. The driver places the unit there if it is safe.
  2. Keep a truck path open. Our service truck needs a 10-foot-wide path and 14 feet of overhead clearance to within 25 feet of the unit.
  3. Stake it in open areas. We stake and strap units on open lots and ridge-top sites; Butler wind gusts tip unstaked units.
  4. Tell us about winter access. Plowed access to the unit keeps it on the route. Unplowed units get serviced when the path opens.
  5. Call when the job ends. Pickup within 2 business days; billing stops at pickup.

Questions customers ask about this rental

I have job sites all over Butler County. Do you deliver to each one?

Yes. Each site gets its own unit and address on your account. When a job ends in two or three weeks, we move the unit to the next site for the $75 delivery charge and the 28-day cycle keeps running; we do not start a new rental.

Do you have flat monthly rates or does it change by location?

The unit rate is flat: $199 per 28 days for a standard unit anywhere in Butler County and the same across western Pennsylvania. Only the one-time delivery line changes with distance, starting at $75 within 25 miles of Butler.

Can I get it serviced twice a week?

Yes, for $45 per extra visit. We suggest it when more than 10 workers share one unit, during concrete pours and in July–August heat. A second unit is often cheaper than twice-weekly service on a long job.

Is there a pickup fee at the end?

No. Delivery and pickup are one charge on the first invoice. When you call for pickup the unit leaves within 2 business days and nothing else bills.

Can we be invoiced instead of paying by card?

Contractors and businesses can apply for net-15 terms with a credit application and W-9. New accounts pay the first cycle by card at delivery; invoicing starts on the second cycle.

We break ground Tuesday. When do you need the order?

Friday for a Tuesday delivery is comfortable; Monday by 1 PM still works for a Tuesday morning window in Butler County. Same-day is available before 1 PM if the footer inspector shows up and asks where the toilet is.

Does the unit come with hand sanitizer and toilet paper?

Both, at delivery and at every weekly service: two rolls of toilet paper and a filled sanitizer dispenser. A freestanding handwashing station is extra and is what OSHA's near-proximity rule usually calls for on sites with concrete, paint or silica work.
