What is a portable handwashing station?

A portable handwashing station is a freestanding two-sided sink with a 22-gallon fresh-water tank, a 24-gallon gray-water tank, foot pumps on each side, two soap dispensers and four paper-towel dispensers, so two people wash at once with no plumbing. Ours are PolyJohn Bravo units. A full tank gives about 350 washes.

Does it need a water hookup?

No. The driver fills the fresh tank from the truck at delivery. If the event runs long, you can top it up with a garden hose through the fill port; the gray tank drains through a valve into a bucket or is pumped at pickup.

When is a handwashing station required on a jobsite?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f)(1) requires employers to provide adequate washing facilities for employees engaged in operations where contaminants may be harmful, and 1926.51(f)(3) requires lavatories in near proximity to toilet facilities. For a Butler site with painting, concrete, lead or silica dust, that means a sink within easy reach of the porta potty. One station per 10 workers keeps lines short.

How many stations does an event need?

Plan one two-sided handwashing station per 4 portable toilets, or one per 200 guests when food is served, whichever gives more. A 150-guest wedding with 3 flushable units needs 1 station; a 600-person fair with 12 units needs 3 stations spread across the clusters. Food vendors must have their own handwash setup under PA food code; your station is for guests.

Questions renters ask about this unit

Does the water freeze in winter?

Below about 25 °F, yes. From December through February we rent stations with a non-toxic antifreeze mix in the fresh tank for outdoor jobsites, or place the station inside a heated trailer or garage. The soap still works; the towels stay dry under the hood.

Can I refill it myself?

Yes. Open the fill cap on top and add water with a garden hose. The gray tank drains through the valve at the base. Most customers never need to; 22 gallons covers 350 washes.

Is the station tall enough for adults and low enough for kids?

The basins are 34 inches high, which works for adults and children over about 6. For school events we bring a plastic step for younger kids on request.

Do I need a station if I rent a deluxe unit with a sink?

Not for a single-unit party. For jobsites, a freestanding station beside the toilets is the usual way to satisfy OSHA's near-proximity rule for the whole crew; the sink inside a deluxe unit serves only the person using that unit.

Do you supply soap and towels, or do I?

We stock foam soap in both dispensers and paper towels in all four holders before delivery. Monthly rentals are restocked weekly. A refill pack for a long event is $12.
